Scouting for Food

District Program

Scouting For Food in our District supports four local Food Pantries that are desperately in need of lots of Food.

This annual district-run food collection drive is usually in either November or February.  The event has two parts.  The first weekend, fully uniformed Scouts (Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Venturers and Scouting's adults) distribute flyers to houses along pre-assigned routes.  These flyers inform the people that the Scouts will be back next week to collect food for the local food pantries.  The second weekend, fully uniformed Scouts walk the routes once again, this time collecting food that is left out for them by the people.  The food is collected and brought back to Prince of Peace where it is distributed among four local food pantries.

Troop 22's Role

This year we need Scouts, parents, siblings, Aunts and Uncles from Troop 22 to come to Prince of Peace between 9 and 5 on Saturday, February 16th, to help count and collect the food brought in by other units.  There is work to be done directing traffic (cars & people), receiving, counting, sorting, boxing & moving sometimes heavy boxes (even small boxes full of cans are not light) to pallets. Later in the day, the pallets will be picked up for distribution to the 3 other food banks (the 4th being the one operating out of Prince of Peace).

This is an important service project, providing huge amounts of food to the local food banks.  It is a great opportunity for us to be grateful for what we have and to give our time to help those in need.

Also, if each Troop 22 family were to bring with them at least one box of canned or other non-perishable food, it will add to the total. A suggestion has been made to have parents collect from co-workers and bring that too.  Cans with pop-off tops (i.e. no can opener needed) are used to give to the homeless in our area.  The pantries also need things like baby formula (in cans), diapers, and baby food.
