Troop 22 Annual Swim check

Each year before we head off to camps and High Adventure, the troop reviews all of its Scouts for swimming ability.  The leaders need to know, before we get to camp, how well each Scout swims!  For Florida Seabase and Northern Tier High Adventures all participants must pass the "Swimmers" swim check, for all other camps we just need to know at which swimming level each Scout is currently.

Troop 22 follows the BSA Safe Swim Defense policy for all outings involving swimming.  Each Scout and Leader in the troop needs to understand and follow this policy.

There are three levels of Scouts:  Non-swimmers, beginners and swimmers.  Non-swimmers do not have to pass a test at all.  The following checks need to be completed to be classified as swimmer or beginner.

Swimmers Swim Check

  •  jump feet first into water over the head

  •  swim 75 yards in a strong manner (sidestroke, breaststroke, trudgen, crawl)

  •  swim 25 yards using resting back stroke.

  •  swim must include at least one turn.

  •  rest by floating for 1 minute after the swim.

Beginners Swim Check

  •  jump feet first into water over the head

  •  swim 25 feet. (not underwater)

  •  turn and return to starting point.
