Weekly Troop MeetingsWhen and WhereEvery Monday evening (see Calendar) 7:15 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. We start promptly so plan to be at the Church by 7:05 so you are ready! Prince of Peace Episcopal Church 5700 Rudnick Avenue, Woodland Hills Why?The purpose of troop meetings is to plan and prepare for the upcoming outing(s). What do we do?
Meeting FormatEach meeting is planned by the Patrol Leaders Council and follows a similar format. OpeningPromptly at 7:15 one patrol runs an opening flag ceremony. SkillThere is a short period of announcements and then one patrol or other resource leads the skill time. During the skill time the assigned patrol teaches the rest of the troop a relevant Scouting skill. Sometimes there are two simultaneous skill sessions: one for younger Scouts and one for more experienced Scouts. Patrol TimeAfter the skill time is the Patrol Time. This is time set aside for each patrol to handle patrol business such as planning for outings (meals, who’s going etc.), preparing for an upcoming skill, game or opening assignment, or just fixing the patrol flag or revamping the patrol yell. Patrols can also use this time to plan for separate patrol outings or events without the troop. GameOne patrol is usually assigned to run the game session. This is the fun part of the evening and patrols learn that it is not so easy to run a fun and good game! ClosingTo close the meeting the SPL usually asks all Scouts and parents to make a very large circle. During this circle up time various announcements are made. It is fantastic for parents to come into the room and join the circle. That way the parents can keep track of what is going on in the troop. Although our Scouts are learning and growing in many ways, parents who wait in the car may not ever hear about a program or event that they would like to know about. Flyers might mysteriously turn into paper airplanes before they get home. After the announcements have all been made, it is time for our Scoutmaster minute. This is a short story or talk by the Scoutmaster to set the tone for the meeting and give Scouts and parents alike something to think about on the drive home. After the Scoutmaster minute, the SPL leads the entire circle in the Scoutmaster’s Benediction. “May the great master of all Scouts be with us ‘til we meet again” |
